^^** Well, I decided to be proactive today and go to Obsession's IRC help page to figure how to connect to IRC. I can chat now, but I'm clueless about how to download files. I tried checking out Obsession's guide, but...gah! So much text! So many commands!

Is there any IRC veteran here who could give all of us IRC-incompetent users a quick (few setences) explanation of how to download files? Well, if that's possible of course. Everytime I look at a guide, the downloading section is about two pages long. O__O

(And I've talked to plenty of IRC users who say they can't figure out FTP for their life. Gosh, after IRC, you'd think FTP would be child's play. ^x^**)

Thanks Shia. (nothing wrong with your english, I thought that was fine) I'm a little less scared of irc now. Still dont think i'll start using it much, I'd have to really want a file to bother with all the faffing about.

Arg, ftp. I used to use ftp, but since I moved around and messed with my setup I've never been able to get ws_ftp working again so I do without. I suck at this sort of thing - I'd rather do something quicly and badly than save myself effort in the future by taking the time to do it properly. XP.

Im so scared to even try irc cuz all those tutorials having warnings and they seem like they are yelling at you. I read one that was almost all threats like: if you stay on the channel to long you will be banned, if you ask questions you will be banned, if someone doesnt like you you will be banned, if you are a total idiot you will be banned, or something to that extent. I'd love to try it, it would open up a whole new world for manga @_@ *starry eyes* but its too scary. I dont even know what it is i download with...i just click on the links and hope its a zip...i always that was fttp but i get the feeling its not.

oh one question though....do you have to pay to get irc...or mirc..or something to use irc..i really have no clue

nope, no need to pay for the risk of getting banned and hated, irc is free.

I really disliked the thought of starting with irc in the beginning but the need for more yao.. erm.. I mean.. cute nice shoujo mangas like hanakimi were stronger than the fear.
it took me quite a while and few tutorials to become brave enough to even install it ^^
I was kinda scared that the moment I enter a channel everyone will immediately go like: "I feel the presence of a newbie... letz ban her!"
but in fact nothing happened ^^
(actually, after a few minutes and managing to download a few files without anything bad happening to me I already felt like a irc pro ^^)

it's not hard at all, just the really really long tutorials are scary.. (but I'm so grateful that so many of them exist, wouldn't have dared to use irc without them ^^ specially the really great obsession tutorial with nice pics and everything
[img]graemlins/heart.gif[/img] )

(and I have to say that I really really love irc now cause I was able to download a whole bunch of scanlated haru wo daiteita volumes and I simply love that series >.< ... well, only realised that yesterday but I really do ^^)

no Mirc is a free download - I got it from Download.com. its a pretty nifty little program - very user friendly.

as for all the warning - some of the chatroom and leech rooms out there are nasty I would avoid those and if you get banned from them *shruggs* just ignore it - they are not worth your attention. remember no one but a network op can ban you from a network and no one can ban you from ALL the network.

I don't ban anyone in my room for just staying around - I got a camper or two who stay there for days not saying a word.

mind you, again, all we ever do is talk, we don't have any files to share. chatrooms like that often tend to be friendlier than ones that have files for leeching.

its a matter of gathering up those nervs and trying few rooms and see how you get along

bear in mind that its adictive - I never leech I just chat and I am very very very addicted

mmmmm.... there is no simple way to explain it in words because there are so many stages

but - I find this site: Leeching Help helpful because they actually SHOW you what to do. its not very hard just a little bit fiddly.

don't ask me about hosting stuff for download though - I run a small irc channel and we just talk all the time because we are all too lazy to deal with ftp and such like.

anyhoo happy leeching

ok, I'm quite a newb when it comes to irc, but I actually happened to figure out how to get the files I want so I could give a try on an short explanation:
(as for how to connect to the right server... any tutorial will explain it better than me ^^)
(I'm not able to tell you anything about what is what, I can just give an summary on what I do to get files *g*)

1.) when you're in the channel you want (e.g. #shoujomagic or something like that) you go and type

!list

then a lot of pretty coloured text will appear.

2.) next thing is you choose one of the guys fserver depending on what file you want

(it will look like:
-queen- File Server Online Triggers:?/ctcp queen New ? /ctcp queen New Yaoi ? /ctcp queen New Yaoi Raw? Sends:?2/2? Queues:?29/30? Accessed:?8438 times? Online:?0/4? RCPS:?16.6 Kbs by kudo_ran? Served:?24.8G in 4643 files? )

and you copy the /ctcp part (/ctcp queen New for example or /ctcp queen New Yaoi) by just highlighting the text and pasting it your message bar (gosh, maybe you should wait for someone with better english to explain this ^^)

take care that you don't miss the slash out (ctcp queen New) or the text will appear in the channel and get you banned ^^

3.) now a new window should open up and a bit of text will tell you what commands you can use and what will get you banned and things, not too important ^^
the text should end with a [/] and now you go and type

dir

that will get you an list of the folders and files on that fserver
(folders will look something like
HANAKIMI
and files will look like
hanakimi-v08ch041[terrad].zip 3.72 mb)
if you want to acces the folder you type

cd HANAKIMI (or cd Whateveryouwanttoacces)

then a text like [/hanakimi] will appear and you type

dir

again and a list of all the files in that folder will be listed.

5.) to get the files you simply write a "get" and then copy the filename (without the size)

get hanakimi-v08ch041[terrad].zip

then a messages saying that your file has been queued in slot whatever will appear and everything should be fine.

you should leave the persons fserver now, close it or type "quit"
but stay in the main channel to get your files

anyway, I'm sure ppl with more irc experience and better english will also reply *g*
(I miss Risu chan...)
trust me when I say that it's quite simple, despite all the text ^^

in fact my post is quite useless cause it's neither short nor simple ^^;; I tried...

I know I was complaining a while ago that IRC is difficult, but I have to take that back. Once you've tried it a few times, it's not so bad at all. It's the serving part that appears to be more difficult...This site has a basic explanation of IRC, as well as some good links on how to download or serve files: http://www.questie.com/manga/ .

Shia's explanation is really good. Maybe one or two things I can add to that. Always check the channel's rules first thing (!rules). I find this useful because certain channels don't allow you to do a @find command. Typing @find followed by a word will allow you to do a search through the channel's servers for what you want, by giving you the users who have the file you want so that you don't need to search through everything by hand.

I love Nakama's channel! They're really nice there and have a good variety of things to download.

I'm a very well versed IRC user. If I know what fileserver program someone is running, I have no problem (though they're mostly polaris clones). I think kinda the best way to visualize file servers is that they run like the old DOS system (ya know, before Windows ;P God I feel old ). You said this was on obsessions's channel? Lemme get on there, I wanna have a look at what they got there.

*edit* Erm, how can I get to said IRC server? Whats the adress, or where is obsession's page? ^_^
